How to transfer photos, musics, videos from PC/Mac to Android Tablet

Android smartphones and tablets are great content consumption devices. And there are plenty of reasons why you would want to copy a file between a computer and an Android tablet, here’s how to transfer files like music, photos and movies to an Android tablet. Whether you own an Android smartphone, or tablet and a Windows PC, or laptop or an Apple Mac, there is a way of getting your content from one to the other.

Method One-Android File Transfer

For Windows

Transfer files to Android tablet from Windows

Step 1: Head to and download the Android File Transfer software and install it.

Step 2: For starters you’ll need to plug your smartphone or tablet into the laptop or PC which has the files you want to transfer. Do this with the cable supplied with your device, most likely a microUSB cable.

Step 3: Once you’ve plugged in your device, you should get a popup menu of options. Here you can choose different ways of transferring content, most of which are perfectly good options for Android smartphones and tablets.

1. For videos and photos, choose the “Import” option and for music in Windows Media Play pick the “Sync”. Otherwise we suggest the “Open device to view files” option; this will make the device show up in the Windows file explorer as a removable storage drive.

2. We recommend this last option, as long as you know where the files are located on your machine. It makes the Android smartphone or tablet act like any USB memory stick or external hard drive.

Note. If you’re phone doesn’t show up properly, go to the settings and select “Connect as media device (MTP)” or similar. This is normally accessible from the drop down notification menu if the device is plugged into a PC.

Step 4: Depending on which option you’ve chosen, either follow the instructions to import or sync your device with your PC or drag and drop the files from your machine onto your Android smartphone or tablet with the Windows File Explorer.

Tip: Android devices have specified folders for music, movies and pictures so it’s advisable to place the content in the corresponding folder.

For Mac

Note. You will need Mac OS X 10.5 or later and Android 3.0 or later.

Step 1: Head to and download the Android File Transfer software and install it.

Step 2: Plug your Android device into your Mac with the supplied cable.

Step 3: Open the Android File Transfer software by double clicking on it. Browse folders and files on your Mac and transfer files to your Android device.

Method two-USBFor Windows and Mac

How to Use USB to Transfer Files between a Computer and an Android Tablet 372438.image0

Step 1. Connect the Android tablet to the computer by using the USB cable.

Step 2. Open the Android tablet’s storage to display its folder window.

On a Windows computer, choose the option to View Files from the AutoPlay dialog box. If the AutoPlay dialog box doesn’t show up, open the Computer window and then open the Android tablet’s storage icon.

On a Macintosh, the Android File Transfer program starts automatically. Otherwise, you can open the tablet’s folder window on the desktop.

Tip: The Android tablet’s folder window looks like any other folder window. The difference is that the files and folders in that window are stored on the tablet, not on your computer.

Step 3. Locate the files you want to copy.

Open the folder that contains the files, or somehow have the file icons visible on the screen.

Tip: The best way to copy files is to have two folder windows open at once, one for the computer and the other for the tablet.

Step 4. Drag the file icon(s) from one folder to another to copy.

When you drag a file from the computer’s folder to the tablet, you’re copying the file, such as a vCard file, to the tablet. Dragging a file from the tablet’s folder to the computer copies files in the other direction.

You don’t have to be specific where you copy the file from your computer to the tablet. You can drop the file in the root folder. That’s the tablet’s main folder. If you want to be specific, drag the file to the Download folder.

Step 5. Close the folder windows and disconnect the USB cable when you’re done.

Any files you’ve copied from the computer are now stored on the Android tablet. What you do with them next depends on the reasons you copied the files: view pictures using the Gallery; import vCards using the tablet’s address book app; listen to music, and so on.
