NAS devices are becoming more and more popular, since it is easy for us to connect this device with our HDTV, computers and other playable devices. Now my movies are DVD and Blu-ray, and I’m looking to upload my movie collection onto my NAS (My Cloud 4TB) and play them on any device (XBOX 360, Macbook, Apple TV, iPhone, Note 3, tablets, etc.) in my home network.

Searched some info from online, here I will share my solution to backup Blu-ray/DVD to NAS Server for playback on Mac for those who have the similar trouble:

Pavtube ByteCopy for Mac , which is a open source Blu-ray & DVD backuping/coping/ripping application to help you copy Blu-ray and DVD to lossless mkv format with chapters and subtitles. Of course, this Blu-ray ripper can help you convert commercial Blu-ray movies to AVI, WMV, FLV, MOV, etc as well for watching on any mobile devices. If you are using Mac, you can also use the Blu-ray Ripper for Mac. The windows version is ByteCopy .

Get two programs together:

Now your get it installed and lets get started! I will share my experience for the easy way to backup Blu-ray and DVD to lossless MKV on your NAS Server on Mac with keeping chapters and subtitles.

To begin:

Launch the program and add the movie you want to encode by clicking the “Load file(s)” icon on the main interface. You can see the chapter information of your Blu-ray, DVD movies on the main interface after you loading to the program.

Note: A blu-ray drive is needed for blu-ray ripping.

Then choose the output format. In order to preserve the chapter structure and subtitles, you’d better choose the “Multi-track Video”. Under this profile, you have three choices which all can preserve chapter structure.

If you choose “Lossless/encoded Multi-track MKV(*mkv)” format, you can output the BD/DVD with lossless quality and allow multiple audio tracks, multiple subtitles.

One special function that makes ByteCopy for Mac stands out is you can easily select you needed tracks, subtitles.

The last thing you need to do is hit the “Convert” button to copy Blu-ray and DVD to lossless MKV format. Just wait a moment and then you can output the lossless mkv videos with the chapter and subtitles preserving. Just copy converted movies from computer to NAS, and then you can stream them to XBOX, HDTV, etc. from NAS devices for playing.
