Problem 1: Import M4V to iMovie
I transferred a DVD to a MPEG-4 movie using HandBrake. I can open and screen the file (just over 2 hours) using QuickTime, but I cannot import it to iMovie–which tells me it doesn’t recognize the format. I need to edit it for a documentary sample reel. What can I do to get it into iMovie for editing?
Problem 2: .m4v files listed at spotify files not imovie . Any ideas?
I’ve been saving some old video tapes by importing them into iMovie 10.0.5. Some of them came from a previous iMovie version, 9.9.5 (?). Due to space constraints I moved them to an external disc and all of a sudden they’re marked as Spotify files (.m4v). Spotify has become their default player! I changed the default player to quicktime in the Get Info window but their still listed as Spotify files. How do I fix this? Thanks for any and all help.

The situation that you can’t import m4v videos to iMovie is likably to occur as above.
Why does it happens? Here are two reasons:
Reason 1: iMovie will not import movies with extra tracks such as a chapter track, if your M4V files contain extra tracks, iMovie will refuse to import.
Reason 2: M4V is a container video format which may encode with a variety of codecs like H.264, MPEG-4 and etc. If the M4V files are using the H.264 codec which is not meant for editing, your iMovie will fail to import those kinds of M4V movies, let alone to edit M4V in iMovie.
