Exporting for YouTube

While YouTube accepts several formats, it’s best to use MP4. When exporting a video to YouTube, you’ll get the best results by choosing frame rates between 25 and 30. A 16:9 resolution like 640 x 360 also helps make your video clearer. You may need a H.264, MPEG-2, or MPEG-4 codec for the exported video to work properly in YouTube.

The site doesn’t have a recommended bit rate, so feel free to use your preference. Since sound quality can affect how people perceive video, choose a 44.1 kHz sample rate.

Exporting for Vimeo

When exporting video for Vimeo, you can choose from a variety of frame rates, including 24, 23.976, 25, 30, and 29.97. Use a 640 x 480 resolution for standard- definition video and a 1280 x 720 resolution for HD video. For the video bit-rate, it’s best to select 2,000 Kbps for standard-definition video and 5,000 Kbps for HD video.

You can give the video quality audio by using a 320 Kbps bit-rate and 48 kHz audio sample rate. You’ll need the AAC-LC audio codec to export properly for Vimeo.

Exporting for DVD

The format that you use for DVD largely depends on the type of DVD player you plan to use. Nearly all DVD players, whether designed for PAL or NTSC, can read the MPEG-2 format, so it’s best to use it. NTSC is used in most North and South American countries. PAL is used in Europe, Australia, and most parts of Asia.

If exporting for NTSC DVD, you’ll typically get the best results by using 720 x 480 image resolution, 29.97 fps, and 6,000 Kbps video bit-rate. Audio should use a 224 Kbps bit-rate.

If exporting for PAL DVD, use a 720 x 576 image resolution and a 25 fps PAL is similar to NTSC in that they both use a 6,000 Kbps video bit-rate and a 224 Kbps audio bit-rate.

The results can vary depending on your camera, editing software, and other factors. Start with these best practices before making adjustments that give your video the look that you prefer.

Chapter 5: The Upload

Once you have your video edited and exported, you can share it on a website or social media platform like Instagram or YouTube. Each service has its own protocol for uploading content, so make sure you understand how to use your favorite sites.

Using YouTube Video Manager

1. If you don’t already have a YouTube account, you’ll need to sign up. Since Google owns YouTube, a Gmail, Google Drive, or other type of Google account will also work.
2. Click the “upload” button on YouTube’s homepage.
3. Select the video you want to submit to YouTube. While the video uploads, you can add metadata such as a description of the video, its title, and tags.
4. Click the “publish” button to make the video accessible online.
5. To make the video available to anyone online, make sure you deselect “private” and “unlisted.” If you only want certain people to see the video, then make sure to set your account accordingly by following these directions.

Using YouTube Uploader

The free YouTube Uploader can make the uploading process easier, especially if you want to upload several videos at once.
1. Install Free YouTube Uploader on your computer.
2. Open the program so you can drag and drop files into the dialogue box.
3. Click the “video info” button so you can give the file a title and edit properties.
4. If uploading multiple videos at once, right-click on the dialogue box to set several titles and properties at the same time.
5. Click the “upload” button, use the dialogue box to sign in to YouTube, and wait for the videos to upload.

Uploading Video to Instagram

While Instagram members can record video directly to their accounts, it’s also possible to upload video saved on a device. Many people upload video from their mobile devices, such as iPhones, iPads, and Android smartphones.

1. Open the Instagram app in your device.
2. Tap the camera icon to switch to video.
3. A box will appear at the bottom right of your screen. Tap it to access your device’s video album.
4. Choose the videos you want to upload to Instagram.
5. Since you can only post up to 15 seconds of video on Instagram, use the video strip to select the portion you wish to upload.
6. On Apple devices, tap “add” to start the upload. On Android devices, tap the arrow at the screen’s top.
