HitFilm Pro combines standard professional editing tools with a large collection of visual effects features and essential color grading and motion graphics tools. Although the HitFilm Pro has claimed wide support for all media with different formats, frame rates and resolutions all the same timeline. However, a lot of users from HitFilm Pro complains that they fail to load the common MP4 files to HitFilm Pro.

“I am editing with MP4 videos on HitFilm Pro, and I understand that apparently that codec is difficult to edit with, but come on guys really? The most popular video codec runs slow on such an ‘advanced’ software such. Idk maybe its my computer, but still, very annoying.”

“Just got my higher end Windows Laptop, and having issues loading the .Mp4 file to it. It’s higher end, has a great graphics card and lots of memory. Als have QuickTime installed. Just will not import. Help?”

Why HitFilm not import certain MP4 video?

MP4 is a container but not a codec. Therefore, it can contain various different video and audio compression codec. However, from HitFlim Pro supported file types, we can see that it only handle the following file types:

Video

Audio

AVCHD (M2T, MTS, M2TS)
AVI (including 10-bit and 12-bit GoPro Cineform (Windows only)
DV & HDV
MP4 (AVC/H264 & AAC)
MPEG-1 & MPEG-2 (TS, PS, MPE, MPG, MPEG, M2V)
MXF (DVCPro HD)
QuickTime MOV (including 10-bit and 12-bit Pro-Res (requires that an up to date version of QuickTime is installed on your computer)
WMV

AAC
MP3
M4A
MPA
WAV
WMA

From above lists, we can see that you will only be able to load MP4 files compressed with AVC/H.264 & AAC into HitFilm Pro. If you try to load MP4 files encoded with some codec such as H.265, HitFilm Pro will fail to recognize the MP4 files.
