It won’t be difficult for you to transfer home-made DVD movies to computer hard drive, however, as for commercial DVD movies, it would a great hassle since commercial DVD disc are usually equipped with complicated copy protection and region code, you will need a specific DVD Ripper application to bypass that protection.

Although there are many free DVD Ripper software on the market, however, you may be disappointed to find some of them like Handbrake and Format Factory lack the ability to remove DVD copy protection, others like VidCoder does not defeat the CSS encryption found in most commercial DVDs, there is still some application such as MediaCoder is only limited to early version CSS-protected DVDs. Although MakeMKV does a good job by breaking the encryption, however, the only output MKV formats are not accepted by Avid Media Composer to import.
