Why HitFilm Express have problems when importing MP4 with problems?
From the specification page of HitFilm Express, we can see that it can native import the following video and audio file formats:
Video formats: Quicktime, AVI, MOV, MP4 (AVC/H264 & AAC), MPEG-1 (TS, PS, MPE, MPG, MPEG, M2V), MXF (DVCPro HD), DV, HDV, WMV
Audio: AAC, MP3, M4A, MPA, WAV and WMA
From above lists, we can see that although HitFilm Express has included native importing suppport for MP4 files, however, it only allow you to import MP4 files encoded with AVC/H.264 video codec and AAC audio codec. However, it is well known that MP4 is a container file format, it can be compressed with various different video codec such as MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4 (A)SP, H.264/MPEG-4 AVC, H.265/HEVC, VC-1/WMV, Real Video, Theora, MVC, etc and audio codecs like MP3, WMA, Opus, AAC, AC3, DTS, LPCM, ALAC, DTS-HD, etc.
If you try to import MP4 with above listed unsupported video codec or audio codec to HitFilm Express, then HitFilm Express will either fail to read the video codec or the audio codec. To fix this codec incompatible issue, you will need to perform a codec transcoding process.
