For a further editing in Final Cut Pro with your camcorder footage ? Surely, Final Cut Pro allows you to capture video footage directly from your DV camcorder. However, before you can begin capturing video, you’ll need to properly connect your camcorder to your computer. Once your device is connected, Final Cut Pro uses a FireWire device control that allows you to control the playback of video footage on your camcorder from within the application, rather than using the controls on your camera. So, here is a quick tutorial that will teach you how to connect your camcorder to Final Cut Pro.

For the preparation you need to do:

A computer with Final Cut Pro installed

A digital camcorder

A six pin to four pin FireWire cable

Main steps are listed below as a reference: Step 1: Turn off the Camcorder Before connecting the camcorder to your computer, make sure that is turned off to avoid possibly damaging the camera or your computer. Step 2: Connect the Cable Connect the FireWire cable to the FireWire port on your computer. Then, connect the smaller end of the cable to your camcorder. (Note – Some cameras or computers may have the port labeled as IEEE 1394 or I Link; however, these are the same types of FireWire connections.) Step 3: Power on the Camcorder Turn the power on for your camcorder. Step 4: Launch Final Cut Pro On your computer, open Final Cut Pro. Launch the program from your dock or shortcut icon on your desktop. Step 5: Set off the Camcorder in Final Cut Pro Go to the menu bar and choose file ‘Log and Capture’. The ‘Log and Capture’ window will appear and you should see your camcorder in the list of devices. If your camcorder is properly compacted, Final Cut Pro will display the ‘VTR OK’ at the bottom of the ‘Log and Capture’ window. Step 6: Set up External Video Devices With Final Cut Pro, you can view the video from your camcorder on an external monitor. To do this, you’ll need to use the proper cable to connect your analog video outputs (S-Video or composite cables) to your camcorder into your NTSC or PAL compatible video monitor input. Step 7: Set up Audio Preferences If you want to listen to the audio from the video through speakers or an amplifier, you also need to use the correct cable to connect the analog audio output (usually stereo RCA) to the input jack of a stereo amplifier. You may also route the sound through an audio mixer to provide greater control and flexibility when editing. On the other hand, if you prefer listening to the audio signal from the footage through your regular computer speakers, you’ll need to set up the ‘Clip Settings’ in the ‘Log and Capture’ Windows and enable the preview feature. By doing this, Final Cut Pro will send audio signals from the footage to the audio output specified in the output section for the sound pane in your system preferences. Step 8: Start Capturing Once you have set up your camcorder, you can begin using it to capture video and bring it into Final Cut Pro.
