GOPRO HERO5 Black is the latest flagship action camera from the influential US company now synonymous with the category. HERO5 Black is the first device to be waterproof without a case and will shoot video using the power of your voice. Here’s our full review.

Video Quality

GoPro has led the field with its video quality and don’t expect anything less from the HERO5 Black.

For such a small device this camera produces an incredible image especially when you opt to record in full Ultra HD 4K.

If that eye-popping resolution is too much for your computer to handle the HERO5 can record in plenty of different formats including 720p and 1080p.

This new GoPro also features full professional-grade electronic video stabilisation which helps produce wobble-free footage.

We put the HERO5 Black through numerous tests and can guarantee that the stabilisation will be a hugely welcomed addition to anyone who regularly uses a GoPro.

All of our footage looked smooth and it’s a huge improvement over some of the firm’s previous efforts.

New “Case Free” Look

The HERO5 Black has all the hallmarks of a GoPro but there’s one big difference – this new flagship is waterproof without the need for a case.

In fact, GoPro states that you should easily be able to take it to depths of around 10 meters without rendering it totally useless.

The removal of the bulky clear case found on previous GoPros is a welcome design change but don’t get too excited.

Without any in-built connectors The HERO5 Black has no way of attaching to any accessories.

This means you have to place the camera in the supplied cage if you want to fit it to a tripod, handle or your clothing.

Once this cage is wrapped around the camera it covers the charging and SD Card ports which stops the ability to gain quick access.

It’s great that GoPro has made their new camera water resistant but it’s annoying it isn’t totally case free.

Better Sound & Display

Although we’ve discovered that the GoPro HERO5 Black isn’t totally free of its case, the fact it’s not enclosed in a box, like older devices, does have a huge advantage.

The sound on this new camera is much-improved and the stereo recording means you can actually hear what’s going on in the footage without it sounding muffled.

GoPro always admitted its audio quality lagged behind its image capabilities and this has now been fully addressed on the HERO5 Black.

Another issue that users won’t have to face anymore is seeing what they are actually shooting.

The HERO5 Black includes a decent touch display on the rear of the camera which allows for quick access to the settings and the ability to view and review what you’re filming.

Voice & Simplified Controls

If you’re flying down a hill on your mountain bike it’s unlikely you’ll want to let go of the handle bars to hit the record button on your camera.

To fix this problem GoPro has added voice controls to its Hero5 Black.

This allows you to shoot video or photos by saying simple phrases such as “GoPro record a video”.

Like most voice activation we had varying degrees of success with this new technology.

In a quiet room it works pretty well but it will struggle to understand you in windy or more noisy conditions – which is where most people will no doubt want to use it.

GoPro is selling a Bluetooth mic which does improve the voice recognition but, without this, you might find speaking to the GoPro more than a little frustrating.

If you don’t fancy speaking to your GoPro it’s very simple to control manually.

The touch display has an intutaive menu system and there’s easy one-touch recording for instantly capturing those epic moments.

Battery life & Auto Uploads

If you’re a heavy user, battery life could be an issue.

The HERO5 Black will chew through power pretty quickly especially when recording 4K footage.

During our full day of filming we had to recharge the camera a couple of times and it’s certainly worth packing some spare batteries if you’re going to be away from power.

To combat these battery life issues, GoPro has launched a Dual Battery Charger which can charge the HERO5 Black around 45 per cent faster than previous models.

This power pack will set you back around £45 which includes one spare battery and it’s definitely worth considering if you want to use the HERO5 for long periods.

When you do return from any adventures and plug your HERO5 into the mains you can now get the device to instantly upload footage to the Cloud.

This service won’t be available in the UK until later this year and you’ll need to pay a monthly subscription to use it.

However, this Auto-Upload feature should avoid losing any valuable footage and you can instantly view all Cloud footage directly on your smartphone.
