As a video compression codec standard, H.264 is ubiquitous. Most deivces will play and export H.264 very well. Aiming at reducing the bendwith required for transmission of full-motion video, H.264 achieves it very well compared to MPEG-4. But as there pops up a new codec – HEVC, H.264 pale beside this new one. HEVC promises a 50% storage reduction as its algorithm uses efficient coding by encoding video at the lowest possible bit rate while maintaining a high image quality level.

H.265 compresses your data so much more efficiently, using it as your video compression tool will drop your bandwidth and storage requirements by roughly 50%. The table below compares the recommended bandwidth for H.264 vs. H.265 encoding.

With this codec, streaming 4k HEVC video to social network yields twice the result with half the effort than streaming H.264. To make the H.264 MP4 4K video smaller, it’s best to compress H.264 to HEVC, or adjust parameters like frame rate, bit rate etc. Here comes the in-depth guide to help you do so.

There are many video compression tool for Mac and Windows on the Internet help you get smaller H.264 files smaller. Here we are talking about Pavtube Video Converter Ultimate, a video compressor with dozens of profiles including the higher compression rate HEVC, with it, you can transocde 4K H.264 video/BD/DVD to H.265 to save up 50% storage space.

Meanwhile, it also enables you to compress H.264 through adjusting parameters like frame rate, bit rate, resolution etc. If you’re not so much sensitive to video quality, you absolutely can lower video frame rate, lessen the bit rate, downscale resolution to reduce your recorded H.264 MP4 file size without visually quality loss.

Best of all, Pavtube Video Converter Ultimate and other Windows software with perfect support for H.265/HEVC encoding acceleration. As long as your PC are running on a CUDA-enabled Graphics card, the H.265/HEVC encoding speed of Pavtube Video Converter Ultimate (review) can be accelerated about 30X faster than before.

How to Encode H.264 4K/HD Video to H.265/HEVC with the Fastest Nvidia Encoder?

Step 1: Import H.264 4K/HD video into the program.

Start the program on your computer, click "File" > "Add Video/Audio" to import H.264 4K/HD videos into the program.

For load Blu-ray or DVD disc, insert your DVD disc into your computer’s optical drive and your Blu-ray disc into an external Blu-ray drive, click "File" > "Load from Disc" to load Blu-ray/DVD disc into the program.

Import H.264 video into the program.

Step 2: Enable GPU Encode Acceleration.

Click "Tools" > "Options", in the opened "Options" window, click "Acceleration" menu, then check "Enable GPU Encode Acceleration" otpion so that the program will accelerate converion speed when encoding H.264 4K/HD to H.265/HEVC codec.

Step 3: Output H.265 MP4 or MKV format.

Click "Format" drop-down bar, scroll down to select "Common Video" > "H.265 Video(*.MP4)" as the output file format.

Output H.265 MP4 video

For outputting H.265 MKV format, select "HD Video" > "MKV HD Video(*.mp4)" to output, then hit "Settings" on the main interface to open "Profile Settings" window, under Video settings panel, click "Codec" drop-down selection, choose "H.265" as your final output file codec.

Step 4. Adjust output file parameters (Optional)

You are allowed to adjust video and audio parameters if you are not satisfied with the default settings. Presets like size, bitrate, frame rate, audio channels, etc. can be customized in your own way. To compress 4K to 1080p or upscale HD/SD to 4K, you can change video Size(resolution) from 1920*1080 to 3840*2160 or 3840*2160 to 1920*1080 respectively. Or just keep the original as you like.

To get smaller video file size, lowering the video bit rate will get the efficient result.

Step 5: Begin the H.265/HECV codec encoding process.

After all settings is completed, hit right-bottom "Convert" button to begin the conversion from H.264 4K/HD to H.265/HEVC encoding process.
When the conversion is completed, you will get a perfect quality H.265/HEVC file with smaller file size for smoothly viewing and streaming on different devices.
