Can you image that an uncompressed 1080p Full HD video can reach 806 GB at 24FPS and 90 minutes in length? That is really spectacular. When your storage space is not enough for storing more videos, but in the other hand, you are reluctant to give up some videos, so you need to compress the video size.
To make the video size smaller, firstly you need to know the video compression is achieved by removing certain data from the video sequence. There are mainly two types of compression: remove unnecessary redundant data or remove insignificant/less important data. The firt type can exceedingly compress and reduce video size with virtually no quality loss while the second one would dramaticly shirnk video size at the expense of certain quality loss. So how to make the first one happen, the key is to change the video codec rahter than video settings(resolution, bit rate, frame rate, and so on).
When you search the video compressor, Handbrake will be in sight as it’s a free and open-source transcoder for digital video files. Although it is very famous in this area, we still need to test it. Below is the specific steps of compressing video size with Handbrake with no qaulity loss.
Part 1 – How to Use Handbrake to Compress Video with Lossless Quality
As we metioned above, the efficient way to compress video size without quality loss is to change the video codec to another. Here comes the question, change to what codec? If you are not the greenhand in this area of video format, you must blurt out HEVC, aka H.265. As we all know, the most used codec should be AVC, H.264 codec, it can be accepted well by almost all devices. H.265 is a new one, compared to its precedent – H.264, HEVC promises a 50% storage reduction as its algorithm uses efficient coding by encoding video at the lowest possible bit rate while maintaining high image quality level. In the near future, it will take the place of H.264 and dominate the video market. It allows streaming 4k UHD video to become an easier job. The next we will show you how to transcode video to H.265 with Handbrake without lossing quality.
Step 1: Import H.264 MP4 (optinal) Video.
Fire up Handbrake 1.1.0 after the download and installation are finished. Drop a file or folder to Handbrake or load MP4 1080p video via "File" option .
Step 2: Choose Output Format and Preset.
Select "MP4" as output format and "Apple 1080p30 Surround" as output preset.
Step 3: Opt for H265 as Video Codec.
Click "Video" option and choose H265 (x265), H265 (10 bit) or H265 (12 bit) as video codec. BTW: to know the difference between H265 10 bit and H265 12 bit, you can check the explaination of color depth to know more.
Step 4: Compress H264 to H265 Now.
Tap "Start Encode" button and this free video compressor will begin to compress MP4 (H264) to H265 (x265) video at Intel QSV hardware accelerated speed (enable it from "Preferences").
Several mins later, the H264 to H265 (x265) compression, as well as H264 to H265 10 bit/12 bit compression is accomplished. The output file size and quality results are listed below:
|Input Video: MP4 (H264), 1080p Full HD, 23.98FPS
Duration: 38 minutes; File Size: 1.22GB
|Output Video||File Size||Video Quality||Frame Rate||Compression Ratio||Compression Time|
|H265 (x265)||565MB||Intact||23.98FPS||55%||1 hr 42mins 5s|
|H265 10 bit (x265)||572MB||Intact||23.98FPS||54%||2 hr 39mins|
|H265 12 bit (x265)||587MB||Intact||23.98FPS||53%||2 hr 51mins 36s|
From the test data, it’s clear to see that HEVC (H265) does an amazing job in video compression with 55% compression ratio to reduce H264 size from 1.22GB to 565MB while keeping the untouched quality. Of course, there is also a downside in HEVC. That is time consuming in HEVC video encoding using Handbrake (Intel QSV hardware decoding enabled), which might discourage lots of users from using Handbrake to compress H264 to H265.
If you do wanna compress H264 to H265 for smaller file size and better quality at the precondition of time saving, then you can consider to try the best Handbrake alternative – Pavtube Video Converter Ultimate (to get Mac version) which takes full advantage of the NVIDIA CUDA technology and AMD® Accelerated Parallel Processing (APP) to largely accelerate H.264/H.265 video encoding speed. What else can this software do for you?
What you can do with this fastest Nvidia encoder software?
- Encode Blu-ray disc, BDMV folder and ISO image to H.265 MP4 for 4K TV viewing.
– Encode DVD Disc, Video_TS folder, IFO and ISO image file to H.265 MP4/MKV for enjoy on smarttphone or tablets smoothly with perfect quality.
- Convert common video to H.265 for streaming with Wowza engine.
– Adjust output profile settings such as video codec, bit rate, resolution, frame rate, audio codec, bit rate, sample rate and channels, etc to get better output quality of H.265/HEVC video.
- Decode H.265 to H.264 or other popular file formats or devices and program preset profile formats.
– Fast H.264 codec encoding speed with a PC that running on a CUDA-enabled Graphics card or an AMD graphics card with AMD APP technology

How to Encode Video/Blu-ray/DVD to H.265/HEVC with the Fastest Nvidia Encoder?
Step 1: Import video or load Blu-ray/DVD disc into the program.
Start the program on your computer, click "File" > "Add Video/Audio" to import digital file formats into the program, for load Blu-ray or DVD disc, insert your DVD disc into your computer’s optical drive and your Blu-ray disc into an external Blu-ray drive, click "File" > "Load from Disc" to load Blu-ray/DVD disc into the program.
Step 2: Enable GPU Encode Acceleration.
Click "Tools" > "Options", in the opened "Options" window, click "Acceleration" menu, then check "Enable GPU Encode Acceleration" otpion so that the program will accelerate converion speed when encoding video/Blu-ray/DVD to H.265/HEVC codec.
Step 3: Output H.265 MP4 or MKV format.
Click "Format" drop-down bar, scroll down to select "Common Video" > "H.265 Video(*.MP4)" as the output file format.
For outputting H.265 MKV format, select "HD Video" > "MKV HD Video(*.mp4)" to output, then hit "Settings" on the main interface to open "Profile Settings" window, under Video settings panel, click "Codec" drop-down selection, choose "H.265" as your final output file codec.
Step 4. Adjust output file parameters (Optional)
You are allowed to adjust video and audio parameters if you are not satisfied with the default settings. Presets like size, bitrate, frame rate, audio channels, etc. can be customized in your own way.
Step 5: Begin the H.265/HECV codec encoding process.
After all settings is completed, hit right-bottom "Convert" button to begin the conversion from video/Blu-ray/DVD to H.265/HEVC encoding process.
When the conversion is completed, you will get a perfect quality H.265/HEVC file with smaller file size for smoothly viewing and streaming on different devices.
